Juliet Eve and Marcelyn Lebovitz met the same way many other musicians meet, through an online forum. When Juliet made a post in a Facebook group about starting a band with dark pop and electronic influences, Marcelyn was one of the first to respond. Though they couldn’t seem to make their schedules align enough to actually form a band together, they kept in touch, admiring each other’s musical projects from a distance. However, there was still a dark pop shaped hole in Marcelyn’s heart, so she reached out to Juliet about writing a song together. And so, over a year after they met, Juliet and Marcelyn teamed up to write Empty Room, a dark pop rock bop for the ages!
The original intention for this collaboration was to combine both of Marcelyn and Juliet’s bands (Marcelyn, the band and Bad Sleeper) to form a super band to record one version of Empty Room. However, when COVID-19 hit, that became impossible and they had to develop a new plan. That’s when Juliet and Marcelyn decided to take the bones of their new song and let their bands come up with their own separate arrangements. Marcelyn and Juliet sent a simple acoustic version of Empty Room to each of their bands’ producers and members, Travis Martin (Marcelyn, the band) and Matt Drozynski (Bad Sleeper), who then wrote the rest of the instrumental parts. From there, the other members of each band remotely recorded their parts. Now after several months of work, each band has delivered a track that is raucously driving and intensely emotional, keeping true to the original dark pop influences while adding layers of rock influences and the personal touches of each band.
This collaboration between Bad Sleeper and Marcelyn, the band is unique in its conception and execution, but in a time of such turmoil, innovation was required to keep moving forward. This collaboration proves that even a global pandemic won’t stop creatives from creating and that artists are resilient. Both versions of Empty Room will be released together as a double-single on August 21st on all major streaming services!
